Moving help for small businesses

A business move is measured in downtime, not in boxes. Packed sends the crew that empties the office on Friday night and has the desks standing on Saturday, breaks down the pallets a supplier dropped at the curb, and carries the reach-in cooler through a door it barely fits. You supply the truck or the container, we supply the movers.

Moving and freight labor for small businesses around Chicago

The cost of a business move is the day you do not trade. That is the number every one of these jobs is really quoted against, so Packed crews the work to the window you have: a Friday-night load-out and a Saturday set-up, an overnight in a building that will only give you the freight elevator after six, or a Sunday for a shop that opens Monday. Offices, design and photo studios, salons, retail units and restaurants around the city and the suburbs all book the same way.

The work itself is ordinary moving labor with commercial furniture in it. Desks, benches and shelving units come apart and go back together, with the hardware bagged and taped to the piece it came off. Filing cabinets travel empty or strapped. Server racks, display cases and kitchen equipment get blanket-wrapped and dollied, and anything that will not go through the door gets measured before it is lifted rather than after. Tell us both floors and both docks when you book and the estimate reflects the real carry.

A lot of what we do for businesses is not a move at all. It is the pallet that arrives on a truck with no liftgate, the LTL delivery a driver will only leave at the curb, the box truck that has to be loaded before the route leaves, and the warehouse day where an order has to be picked and stacked. Our freight work runs at docks, in warehouse yards and in plain driveways around Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Elk Grove Village and the O'Hare corridor, and it is booked by the hour like everything else.

Describe the space, the deadline and the heaviest thing in the room, and you get a crew size and an hourly quote back. Call (773) 837-6739 or send the form for a free quote.

What makes this move different

The parts of the job that are specific to you, and what the crew does about them.

The clock is the brief

A shop that is shut is a shop that is losing money, so these jobs get quoted against the window you have rather than the pace we would prefer. That usually means a bigger crew for fewer hours.

Freight is the same trade with a pallet jack in it

Deliveries that land with no liftgate and no dock are an everyday booking for us. A crew breaks the pallet down at the tailgate, carries it in and rebuilds the stack inside, which beats paying the carrier to come back.

Heavy pieces get crewed to the weight

Safes, shop machinery, gym racks, a slate-topped table or a commercial cooler are quoted per item and staffed for the route, not handed to whoever happens to be free that day.

How the booking runs

Four steps, so you know what happens between the phone call and the door.

  1. 1
    Step 1

Walk us through both spaces: floors, elevators, dock access and the deadline

  2. 2
    Step 2

We size the crew to the window rather than to a comfortable pace

  3. 3
    Step 3

Crew works after hours or over the weekend, desks and racks broken down and labeled

  4. 4
    Step 4

Everything rebuilt and placed in the new space so you open on time

What gets booked most

The services that show up on this kind of job, usually one or two of them on the same visit.

Small Businesses: frequently asked questions

Can you move our office over a weekend so we do not lose a day?⌄

Yes, and that is how most of these jobs run. We load out on the Friday evening and set up on the Saturday or Sunday, with a crew sized to the window rather than to a relaxed pace. Tell us when you need to be trading again and we plan backwards from that.

Do you work after hours?⌄

Yes. Plenty of buildings only release the freight elevator outside business hours, and plenty of shops can only close overnight. Evening and overnight work is a normal booking, not an exception.

Can you unload a pallet delivery with no liftgate?⌄

Yes, that is one of our steadiest bookings. A crew meets the truck, breaks the pallet down at the tailgate, carries the cartons in and rebuilds the stack inside. It is usually cheaper than a redelivery fee from the carrier.

Will you move restaurant or shop equipment?⌄

Yes. Reach-in coolers, prep tables, display cases, shelving and safes are all work we do, quoted per item where the weight or the route needs it. Send a photo of the doorway and the path out and we will tell you what it takes.

Do you take the desks and shelving apart?⌄

Yes, and we put them back together at the new address. Hardware is bagged and taped to the piece it came off, so nothing is missing when the benches go back up.

Do we have to hire the truck ourselves?⌄

Yes. Packed is a labor company, so the truck, trailer or container stays in your name and the driving stays with you or the rental company. If you are not sure what size to book, read us the inventory and we will tell you.
